César Luena highlights the importance that the EU attaches to textiles, during his visit to Humana

Textiles are experiencing a moment of great importance thanks to the Strategy for sustainable textile products and the Ecological Design for sustainable products, two regulations to be developed by the European Union (EU). This was confirmed by the MEP César Luena after visiting Humana's preparation plant for the reuse of textiles (PxR), located in Leganés (Madrid). Luena is vice-president in the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety of the European Parliament.

Accompanied by the mayor of Leganés, Santiago Llorente, Luena learned first-hand of the textile waste management process and added that "the objective of the European Parliament is to 'give flight' to both issues in the remainder of the legislature".

Both have toured the largest complex in Spain dedicated to the management of textile waste, accompanied by the general director of Humana, Elisabeth Molnar, who highlighted the environmental benefit of reuse and the contribution of the management of used clothing to the circular economy . Humana's work is aligned with the aforementioned Strategy and with the waste hierarchy, which prioritizes reduction and reuse.

Creation of green, qualified and specialized employment

Both Luena and Llorente have been struck by the data from the European Environment Agency, which indicates that each European discards an average of 11 kilos of textiles annually. They have also shown interest in job creation: the non-profit entity has a workforce of 650 people in Spain. That is: it generates a green, qualified and specialized job for every 30 tons of textiles collected.

The MEP has highlighted that the classification of the textile is carried out manually, garment by garment. “As of today there is no technology that replaces the hands or the human eye if the objective is to obtain the maximum use of the waste. The key is the training that the plant team receives”, explained Elisabeth Molnar.

Deputy in the Congress of Deputies between 2008 and 2019) and Organization Secretary of the PSOE (2014-2016), César Luena has been a member of the European Parliament since 2019. He has been a member of the Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament since July 2019.

In the last two years, the PxR plant in Leganés has received visits, among others, from the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, in May 2021; the European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevicius, in November of that same year; and the Minister for the Environment of the Community of Madrid, Paloma Martín, a month later.
