Humana Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo has launched, together with its local partner ADPP Mozambique, an emergency response action in Mozambique, after the passage of Cyclone Filipo. For around 48 hours, Filipo hit the south of the country, with heavy rains and winds gusting to 120 kilometers per hour.

The recent passage of Filipo and the subsequent devastating torrential rains have hit entire communities in Mozambique hard. More than 131,915 people have been affected, with massive damage to infrastructure and livelihoods.

This action in Mozambique marks Humana's third effort in southern Africa to provide aid to vulnerable communities affected by humanitarian crises resulting from various natural disasters.

Objective: support 590 families with first-need kits

Currently, the Filipo response project is in full swing, with the distribution of packages of used clothing to affected families as one of its first actions.

So far, 242 families have already received assistance from the Matola District, in the province of Maputo. The goal is to reach 590 affected families before the end of April through the distribution of food, hygiene kits and educational materials for teachers and students.

Additionally, this project includes a line of work based on disaster risk reduction through the establishment of Community Committees that will be trained and guided to help raise awareness among the local population to better deal with the possible consequences. of natural disasters.

Humana and its role in humanitarian action

In recent years Humana has increased its efforts to support local communities through response, recovery and disaster risk reduction interventions, particularly in areas affected by Cyclone Freddy in Malawi in 2023 and Mozambique in 2023. Cyclone Idai, in 2019.

Once disasters occur, Humana focuses on improving the living conditions of affected people, including those inside displacement camps, by improving housing, ensuring their food security, and promoting hygiene practices and distribution of food and clothes.

After this immediate response phase, our efforts are focused on fostering socioeconomic recovery. To do this, we work together with communities to revitalize agricultural activities and establish strong social safety networks. This multifaceted approach aims to not only help communities rebuild but also strengthen their resilience in the face of climate-induced disasters.
