Humana responds to people affected by Cyclone Freddy in Malawi

Humana Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo and Humana Portugal are offering their support to communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy. The cyclone devastated various areas of Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Madagascar between the months of February and March.

Malawi borders northwestern Mozambique and has around 20 million inhabitants. On March 12 this year, Nsanje province was hit by Freddy, which brought heavy rain and winds, causing severe flooding and landslides. More than 1,000 people died and around 650,000 had to leave the affected areas.

Humana is present in the area through its local partner DAPP Malawi. The organization responded to the catastrophe by implementing different assistance and emergency measures, which have the support of the Foundation.

The response was divided into two phases. In the first, the objective was to mitigate the spread of cholera in flooded areas, through awareness and prevention initiatives (including the distribution of disinfection kits) carried out mainly among the female population. In the second phase, other measures were implemented, such as the distribution of:

  • Food
  • Kitchen utensils and hygiene products in displaced persons camps
  • Menstrual hygiene products

Once the emergency response stage was completed, DAPP has continued its support to the population to ensure the communities return to normality. To achieve this, it works in favor of sustainable food production, through the distribution of seeds, the start-up of crop fields and agricultural training.
