New Humana second-hand clothing store in Barcelona, the 57th in Spain

16-12-2025

In a challenging environment for the second-hand fashion sector, Humana is committed to increasing its number of physical stores. On Friday 19 December, we opened a new store at Carrer Avinyó, 7 bis, in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter. This brings our total number of openings in 2025 to six. It will be our 25th store in Barcelona and our 57th in Spain.

The new store has 210 m2 of retail space and offers more than 5,000 second-hand garments, pre-selected at the sorting plant in l'Ametlla del Vallès (Barcelona) and sourced from donations made by citizens at selective collection points located on public roads in the municipalities.

Humana has gained momentum in 2025: we started the year with 52 establishments and will close this financial year with six new second-hand clothes stores (three in Barcelona, two in Madrid and one in Seville) and the closure of one (in Madrid). We will end the year with 57 second-hand clothing shops in Spain.

‘We are committed to opening new stores because we see great potential in textile reuse, and we remain profitable even in a complex environment,’ explains Rafael Mas, Director of Projects and External Relations at Humana, adding: "However, it is clear that the sector is going through a period of concern: the general decline in the quality and durability of garments reduces their useful life and limits their potential for reuse."

‘The current regulatory framework creates a scenario in which certain operators have preferential access and recognition, while others, even though they perform essential functions in preparing items for reuse, face more restrictive conditions. In this context, we reaffirm our commitment to physical stores based on genuine used textiles, the result of a professional, traceable model that is fully focused on meeting environmental and social objectives,’ he says.

From 36 to 57 shops in 10 years

The evolution of the number of Humana second-hand fashion stores over the last 10 years has been remarkable: in 2015, we had 36 stores in Spain and 1.2 million customers. A decade later, we will end the year with 57 stores and almost triple the number of people who are committed to reused fashion.

The funds generated by the network of shops enables the development of cooperation projects in countries in the Global South and social initiatives in Spain. In addition, we create one permanent full-time job for every 25 tonnes of textiles collected.

This process also has an environmental benefit: the reuse of clothing contributes to the reduction of polluting emissions, since for every kilogram of clothing recovered that does not end up in a landfill, the emission of 6.1 kg of CO2 is avoided.
