Humana & Conference on Lung Health

24-10-2018

Humana People to People participates in the 49th World Conference of the Union on Lung Health that takes place in The Hague, Holland, from October 24 to 27, 2018. Humana is presenting at the Conference the results of the TIMS Program for the fight against tuberculosis, conducted by ADPP-Mozambique, local partner of the Foundation, and TB Alert.

Tuberculosis remains one of the 10 leading causes of death worldwide and is currently the leading cause of death among people living with HIV.

The conference, organized by The Union on Lung Health, is the most important global gathering of actors working towards the end of lung diseases, focusing especially on the challenges of developing countries. The meeting brings together thousands of representatives from more than 125 countries, who can participate in the nearly 150 scheduled sessions. This year's theme is "Political and Social Solutions".

Objectives of this conference

Among the objectives of this conference are:

  • Advance in terms of knowledge about issues related to lung health.
  • Promote social, political and scientific innovation.
  • Empower, enable and accelerate the implementation of political and social solutions.
  • Enhance multisectoral responses and contribute to the sustainable financing of public health for universal health coverage.
  • Provide a platform for dialogue and collaboration among policy makers, communities and civil society to accelerate the implementation of the commitments expressed at the United Nations High Level Meeting on the Political Declaration of Tuberculosis and the Declaration of Moscow of the WHO.
  • Inform and connect TB professionals and politicians making the most of the potential of the Sustainable Development Goals agenda.

Despite international efforts and initiatives to curb tuberculosis, more than 28,500 new cases are registered every day. According to WHO, nearly 2 billion people are infected with the tuberculosis virus. It is a disease that has a cure as long as it is diagnosed in time and the treatment is followed quite rigorously.

Humana, ADPP-Mozambique and the TIMS program

Humana People to People considers it essential to combine efforts in the fields of politics and international cooperation in order to devote the necessary financial resources so that the disease can be combated with guarantees.

ADPP-Mozambique, a local partner of the Foundation, is responsible for coordinating the TIMS program, which began in 2016 in eight countries: Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho and Tanzania. ADPP articulated the work of five other organizations of Humana People to People and three other non-governmental entities for the active search of cases of tuberculosis in the mining populations of the region. TB Alert provided technical support throughout the program.

During the conference, the TB Alert team and the ADPP-Mozambique team will have the opportunity to present TIMS results. This program is based on the accumulated experience of Humana in the combined fight against AIDS and tuberculosis through the TB-TC and TCE (Total Control of the Epidemic) programs. It is the first action of this type implemented at the regional level. The model is based on the prevention and dissemination of information among the members of the community, working door-to-door to increase knowledge of the population, as well as facilitate the diagnosis of tuberculosis and the performance of HIV tests. The program also aims to address the growing number of coinfection cases among the mining population.

Workers in the mining sector, population at risk

According to data from a study carried out by ADPP in South Africa, the employees and former employees of the mining sector are the professionals in which tuberculosis makes the most impression: 38% of the more than 45,000 people diagnosed during the development of the project are miners or ex-miners. 80% comes from Lesotho, Tanzania and Zambia.
