The Madrid municipality of Ciempozuelos is launching a pioneering agroecology and citizen participation project that will transform a plot of land donated by the Town Council into a collective urban garden, thanks to funding from the BBVA and Humana Foundations.
On 3 September, Ciempozuelos held a presentation of the 3C Cultivemos el Clima y la Comunidad (Let's Cultivate the Climate and the Community) Programme, through which we promote the creation of community urban gardens as a tool for environmental, social and educational transformation.
The event began in the park on Avenida de Madrid, where the mayor, Raquel Jimeno, and the deputy mayor, Luis Pueyo, welcomed those interested and thanked the programme for managing and launching the project, as well as the BBVA Foundation and Humana for the financial support that makes its development possible.
The day then continued at the municipal library, where agroecology expert Paula Nieto presented the project framework: objectives, benefits, profiles, commitments, success stories and regulations. She highlighted how, through agroecology, citizen participation and training, an abandoned plot of land can be turned into a green lung, an open classroom and a meeting place for the neighbourhood.
Interest exceeded expectations: the number of people who signed up was higher than the number of plots available, which meant that a selection process had to be put in place. This week, 22 places were allocated to residents of the municipality who will form part of this new learning community. Local groups will also be invited to join the project at a later date.
In the coming weeks, co-creation and intervention workshops will be launched, as this urban garden will be built collectively from scratch. The spaces will be designed, training in agroecology and biodiversity will be organised, and shared operating rules will be established, with the aim of making the garden not only productive, but also an educational, inclusive and community-building space.
With this project, Ciempozuelos is taking a firm step towards a greener, more sustainable and cohesive city, committing to a model of local development that cares for both the environment and human relations through the 3C Programme.
