China: knowing the carbon cycle to fight against climate change

03-01-2022

What impact does the 'mysterious' carbon cycle have on our living environment? This has been the focus of one of the activities that have taken place within the framework of the Yunnan Low Carbon Schools Pilot Project, which the Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo has been developing since 2020 in the Yunnan province of China, with funding from the European Union and the collaboration of an outstanding group of local organizations.

The project team organized a "carbon cycle" role-play in different high schools in Kunming city. Participating students were divided into six groups, representing the different "storehouses" involved in the carbon cycle: atmosphere, ocean, plants, animals, soil, and fossil fuels. In each group, there were students who played the role of "carbon".

Through the information contained in the cards they received, they were representing the different carbon cycles, sharing and putting in common what they were discovering and learning. Based on what they learned, they proposed different solutions for the imbalance that occurs in said cycle:

  • Reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and
  • Save electricity and use renewable energy.
  • Advocate environmental protection and a low-carbon lifestyle.
  • Reduce meat consumption, especially beef, to reduce methane emissions and effectively deal with climate change.
  • Restrict the use of disposable items
  • Stop pollution of the seas and do not throw garbage into the sea.
