China: A decade educating the most vulnerable

19-11-2018

They have been in the center for two months and the children of the village of Dahanba, in the province of Yunnan, do not detach themselves for a moment from their smile. In the middle of September they started their preschool classes, thanks to the work of Humana People to People China (HPPC) that has fully involved the community.

Dahanba's is one of 150 Pre-Schools of the Future (POF) managed by our local partner. Since September, it hosts a score of children from 4 to 6 years old. The POF program is a decade old, a period in which 4,000 students have passed through its classrooms.

The origin of the Dahanba school, co-funded by the ASML Foundation, dates back to last June with the first meeting between the representatives of HPPC and the head of the village committee. They explained the model and concept of the POF, the conditions required, the selection of teachers ... After the approval of the committee, a month later it was decided to take advantage of the room of an abandoned clinic to teach the classes, so it was reformed and conditioned.

The selection process of the teacher had the collaboration of the aforementioned committee, with the participation of the parents. Once selected, he received the appropriate specific training. Finally, thanks to the involvement of all parties, the Dahanba preschool opened on September 11: a day later classes began.

Yunnan is the third poorest province in China. Most of its population is located in rural settlements. 10 million people live below the poverty line. The rate of education in preschool education is 68.2%, six points below the national average (76.4%). In Spain, schooling at 3 years reaches 96%.

The well-being of children

In the Dahanba school, whose first phase is scheduled to last for three years, they are aware that preschool education is vital to favor the early development of boys and girls and thus facilitate their incorporation into primary school. Children's education plays an essential role in the well-being of children and young people, as well as in their cognitive and socio-emotional development.

In this sense, guaranteeing the quality of the early childhood educational development is a priority and the essential axis of the Pre-schools of the Future, whose purpose is to allow access to classrooms in remote rural areas not reached by the government or the one of other organizations. And to materialize it, resources underutilized until then are used, such as empty buildings or stored teaching materials, and the neighbors themselves are trained in the area to become teachers. On the other hand, the fact that children attend early childhood education helps to mitigate social inequality.

Teaching in Mandarin and Wa

The teacher in Dahanba teaches them both in Mandarin and in the minority language wa, according to the educational model of the Chinese government. It has a wide variety of game materials and has the help of an assistant during lunch. In addition, parents participate in the management and operation of the center, as well as in the development of an adequate learning environment in their homes. At the conclusion of the project, the local community will take over the management of the school.

The school curriculum includes both traditional subjects and practical exercises aimed at the development of children's cognitive abilities, through direct participation and observation. Community activities involving large and small are also carried out. Children not only learn in a safe and welcoming environment but also pay attention to their health, hygiene and nutrition. Not in vain the program helps reduce the rate of malnutrition among school children and improves their well-being.

HPP-China trusts that, after three years of the project, the POF of Dahanba reaches at least the results that the rest of the centers: 95% of the students finish pre-school education and enroll in primary school. 80% improves their health status and exhibits better skills than at the beginning of the cycle.

Humana Fundacion Pueblo para Pueblo directly supports two of the 150 preschools managed by Humana People to People China. Since the beginning of the program in 2008 and to date, our local partner counts 4,000 students.
