Belize: promoting youth as an engine for development

11-08-2020

It is now the first year of the start of the Promoting Accountability and Good Governance of Youth Development Programs through Civil Society Organization Engagement in Belize, co-financed by the European Union, and developed by our local partner Humana People to People Belize. The Foundation offers technical assistance and collaborates in the monitoring of the program to ensure its implementation in the foreseen terms.

The action is being carried out in the Stann Creek and Toledo districts, in the southern part of the country, with the participation of 10 communities. These are eminently rural areas, where it is usual for young people to barely participate and get involved in the community, in decision-making and in their own development. For this reason, several youth groups have been identified in order to resume and launch new activities and to foster relationships with other young people and with society in general.

During this first year, it has helped to form and register a total of 11 associations, collaborating with them in the drafting of the corresponding statutes and internal rules, or in issues such as the opening of the bank account for the management of fees. of the respective partners.

In addition, work is done on issues such as respecting the rights of young people, youth empowerment and fostering relationships with other groups, as well as with service companies interested in working with the associations themselves. One of the last actions undertaken within the framework of the Program has been a 4-day training for 27 young people from both districts, focused on leadership and the acquisition of life skills (emotional, social and cognitive).

In total, it is estimated that the action will directly involve 175 young people between 14 and 35 years of age, and indirectly, 230 other people, mainly relatives of the beneficiaries. The Program will end in June 2021.

MAKE A DONATION so that programs like this remain a reality and we continue promoting the development of the communities that need it most.
