3C, weaving networks between Spain and Italy

30-10-2018

The 3C Cultivating Climate and the Community develops links between different actors around ecological and social agriculture. Starting from this premise, last week we participated in a conference that served as a meeting point between similar initiatives in the Community of Madrid and Italy. The event culminated with a visit to 3C Leganés, born four years ago and integrated into a network of nine other social gardens with a global community of over 500 activists among users, family and friends.

Promoting inclusive social agriculture

Medialab's facilities in Madrid hosted the "Encounter of Inclusive Social Agriculture Initiatives. Weaving networks, exchanging experiences between Spain and Italy". The participants shared the conviction that inclusive social agriculture has three great virtues: therapy and rehabilitation, training and employment, and education and social inclusion.

The event was organized by the Madrid Institute for Research and Rural Development, Agriculture and Food (IMIDRA), an autonomous body attached to the Environment and Planning Department of the Community of Madrid, along with Consiglio per la Ricerca in Agricoltura e l'Analisi dell'Economia Agraria - CREA, a public research organization that belongs to the Italian Ministry for agricultural, food, forestry and tourism policies.

Inclusive social agriculture defends that the contact with nature, in particular the agricultural or horticultural activity, contribute to improve the quality of life generating physical, psychological, emotional, cognitive benefits, etc. The objective of the meeting was to bring closer the reality of both countries and to strengthen ties of collaboration between the initiatives of the Community of Madrid, with the auspice of the Italian agency, "one of the pioneering countries in these initiatives, where networks already exist, groups of work, seals of quality and legislation on the matter ", according to the organizers.

Conferences and workshops

The morning session focused on several conferences and participatory activities:

Two representatives of CREA explained the development of inclusive social agriculture in Italy. This group follows the following lines of work: assistance to vulnerable people as a means towards their autonomy, social justice, complementary support to other therapies and environmental education.

A map was drawn up with the experiences of inclusive social agriculture in the Community of Madrid. The effects of the shortage of green and natural spaces on people's quality of life were highlighted, and how this affects even the differences between social groups.

A working group of Red TERRAE was presented, an association that aims to unite public and private entities that promote sustainable, environmental and agro-ecological development.

In the afternoon, the Italian delegation of CREA visited three experiences of social agriculture: 3C Leganés, The Aldaba Farm of the Fundación Aldaba and the Asociación Albalá.

Satisfaction of visitors to 3C Leganés

The 3C agricultural technique, Elena Martín and the coordinator of the program, Damiana Conde, served as hostesses in Leganés. "Everyone was delighted with the project", explains Damiana, "they asked a lot of questions and expressed their recognition saying that what we are doing with the social gardens is what social agriculture represents in all its aspects". He adds: "They conveyed their surprise when they found out that this concept, which is still so ambiguous, is what we have been doing for four years. They love me".

From this visit arose the commitment to return the visit to Palermo; In addition, the Italian delegation expressed interest in knowing the 3C Cornaredo, a similar program that implements our colleagues of Humana Italia, It is an initiative of social agriculture in a municipality near Milan, replicating the success of the program in our country. In addition, at the beginning of the year, 3C Seixal was launched, in the vicinity of Lisbon, by Humana Portugal.
