Calling for the lifting of COVID-19 vaccines patents

15-04-2021

We need all vaccines to be a People’s Vaccine so we can save lives and end the pandemic faster. A People’s Vaccine would eliminate monopoly control by drug companies and make it possible for factories anywhere to start manufacturing vaccines.

Humana People to People joined the People’s Vaccine Alliance movement as part of calling for the COVID-19 vaccination to be made available to all, everywhere, free of charge.

We invite you to sign the call for a People’s Vaccine on the on-going global call demanding the lifting of COVID-19 vaccines patents to save lives. Add your name to the above urgent appeal and join Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, George Clooney, Annie Lennox, Dia Mirza, Sharon Stone, Yemi Alade, Forest Whitaker, Lily Cole, Peter Gabriel, and over a million people around the world, to demand vaccines for all!

Our best chance of all staying safe is to ensure a COVID-19 vaccine is available for all as a global common good. This will only be possible with a transformation in how vaccines are produced and distributed — pharmaceutical corporations must allow the COVID-19 vaccines to be produced as widely as possible by sharing their knowledge free from patents.

Unfortunately, pharmaceutical corporations are protecting their monopolies and putting up barriers to restrict production and drive up prices, leaving the whole of humanity in danger. No one company can produce enough for the whole world. As long as vaccine solutions are kept under lock and key, there would not be enough to go around. We need a People’s Vaccine, not a profit vaccine.

From WHO

According to the World Health Organization(WHO) it revealed that wealthy countries have received the vast majority of the world’s supply of Covid-19 vaccine doses, while poor countries have obtained less than 1%. This was said at a press briefing on Friday 9 April 2021.

Of the 727 million vaccine doses that have been distributed across the globe, “over 87% have gone to high-income or upper- and middle-income countries, while low-income countries have received just 0.2%,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The United States, UK, European Union, other rich countries, and pharmaceutical companies are still rejecting growing demands to waive patents and transfer technology. See chart and data by country on COVID-19 vaccinations.

On average, 1 in 4 people in high-income countries have received a coronavirus vaccine, compared with just 1 in more than 500 in low-income countries, according to the WHO Director- General.

“There remains a shocking imbalance in the global distribution of vaccines,” said the WHO chief.

The COVID-19 vaccines will stop people from dying, prevent new variants from emerging, reignite economies and offer the best hope to end the pandemic.

To begin with, it is critical to ensure access to lifesaving Covid-19 vaccines, treatments and equipment for everyone in the world. Patents should be suspended, technological knowledge shared freely and openly, and no profiteering allowed during this pandemic.

Governments, scientists and pharmaceutical companies must cooperate and combine resources to ensure no one is left behind. The COVID-19 pandemic will not be over, until it’s over everywhere.

From OXFAM

The economic consequence of the pandemic if vaccines are not distributed equitably globally will harm the rich countries and will hit the poor even harder. Rich countries must open the way to cheaper mass-produced COVID-19 vaccines in order to protect every person in the world and avert a $9 trillion global economic catastrophe, according to Oxfam.

“This is a stark reminder that vaccine inequality has a real economic impact on us all, even as a solution stares our leaders in the face. The richest people can cope better with this cost but every person, in every country in the world, is being expected to pay and struggle —the poorest people most of all,” said Anna Marriott Public Health Manager for Oxfam.

Globally, as of 12 April 2021, there were more than 135 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, including close to 3 million deaths, reported by WHO. The same report showed that, a total of 727 million vaccine doses has been administered worldwide.
