Phenomena such as El Niño continue to wreak havoc among the most vulnerable populations in Sub-Saharan Africa, a direct consequence of climate change. A clear example can be seen in Zimbabwe. The extreme drought caused by El Niño in 2024 was the worst in the last 40 years.
In the affected areas, many of them peri-urban, 40% of the population experienced some form of food insecurity. Currently, in rural areas, 2.6 million people lack access to sufficient quantity and quality of food to meet their basic needs.
For this reason, responding to the call of our local partner DAPP Zimbabwe and in collaboration with our neighbour Humana Portugal, we have launched a humanitarian action project to mitigate the effects of the extreme drought.
DAPP requested our support to assist the affected populations on the ground, especially in Epworth, through the implementation of potable water sources, small-scale cultivation areas, actions to improve sanitation and hygiene conditions, and efforts to prevent the spread of cholera.
Our colleague and humanitarian action specialist Carles Tomàs recently visited the area to witness the progress of the project firsthand and to continue gathering information about the situation of the communities affected by El Niño.
