Humana Participates in a Pilot Test Led by Re-viste in Rubí (Barcelona)

Humana is participating in a pilot project for the management and collection of textile and footwear waste in Rubí (Barcelona). This initiative is part of a national project aimed at testing a collaborative and sustainable model for selective collection in preparation for the future development of the EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) system.

The project, promoted by Re-viste (Association for Textile and Footwear Waste Management), involves the Rubí City Council, the Vallès Occidental Waste Management Consortium, the Catalan Waste Agency, Solidança/Roba Amiga, and Humana. It utilizes nearly 80 containers installed throughout the municipality (46 of which belong to Humana), serving a population of 82,000 residents.

This one-year initiative allows for the evaluation of a relational and operational framework between the different stakeholders in the management chain, in collaboration with municipalities and operators currently providing this service.

This experience is particularly relevant given the upcoming implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles and footwear. The goal is to guarantee an efficient, traceable, and digitized system that complies with future European regulatory requirements regarding the reduction of waste sent to landfills.

The lessons learned during this phase of the SCRAP (Collective System for Extended Producer Responsibility) are expected to help lay the groundwork for a model that can be replicated at a national level.

A Sustainable Model

Rafael Mas, Director of Projects and External Relations at Humana, thanked Re-viste for the opportunity to participate in this pilot, stating it represents "a new step in the development of the SCRAP and in creating the most sustainable model possible for used textile management."

"Rubí is an excellent example of coexistence and complementarity between two entities with extensive experience in managing used textiles. It is the closest thing to managing a public service in batches which, within the established legal framework—whether we like it or not—should be the norm for medium and large-sized municipalities," he added.

"We are going to do the best job possible in this pilot to generate data, trace flows, and help Re-viste make the best decisions to facilitate the most efficient waste management possible while protecting the environment," he indicated.
