The team behind the European innovation project TexMat solution held its assembly at our facilities in Leganés (Madrid). This ambitious consortium, comprised of 14 partners from 7 countries, met to consolidate progress made during its first six months and take a giant leap forward in the co-creation of the TexMat solution: piloting a deposit and return system for used clothing in Europe.
“TexMat: Automated collection and sorting solution for consumer textiles” aims to promote a deposit and return system for used textiles through smart, automated containers. The integrated technology within these containers will help pre-sort deposited items and evaluate their quality.
Our host, Humana Spain, opened their doors for us to see the behind-the-scenes of the collection and sorting of post-consumer textiles. In 2025, 61% of the post-consumer textiles sorted by us went for reuse, with 21% finding a new owner in Europe (Spain, Portugal, and France) and the rest exported to Africa (Malawi, Mozambique, Angola, Zambia, and Guinea Bissau).
The TexMat solution focus is on the technical backbone of circularity, including:
For Humana, the TexMat solution isn't just about following the EU waste hierarchy, where reuse is a priority. It is about operational viability, since revenue from reselling textiles funds their vital work.
This highlights another core focus of our Madrid meeting: defining the right business model to support key stakeholders, especially reuse operators, while also looking at Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
